Mechanical Engineering Technology is designed to train students to develop a knowledge and understanding of basic principles of mechanical engineering practice and also apply their knowledge in the correct use, care of machines and equipment.
Units of instruction
- Safety: – personal, safety, movement, of materials, fire precaution, layout of workshop, machine tool safety rules, etc.
- Engineering materials: – classification of materials, basic properties, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, non-metallic objects, heat treatment, forms of supply and storage.
- Measurement: measurement tools and instrument, use of micrometers and veneer measuring instruments.
- Making out: – marking out from datum face, tools and equipment. Use of templet and formulate.
- Bench fitting: –
- The usage of, hand and bench tools, the work bench, backspins, files, hammers, chisels, scribers, taps and dies.
- Fastening and jointing, mechanical fasteners, riveted joints, soft soldered joints and common adhesives.
- Machines: – Power transmission, fitting assembly and alignment, maintenance and lubrication.
- Machining: –
- Drilling machines: -speed and feeds for drilling and reaming, spot facing, countersinking and counter boring.
- Lathe work: -step turning, parallel turning, taper turning, boring, reaming, facing and screw thread cutting) Milling machine; – spines, and gear cutting, slides and keyways and generating of flat surfaces.
- Pedestal and grinding machines: – grinding of hand tools.
- Surface grinding machines: -grinding of flat surfaces.
- Universal grinding machine: -for surfaces.
- Welding: Oxy – Acetylene Welding, Metal Arc Welding and Mig/Mag Welding
- Forging: – Upsetting, Drawing and Bending.
- Sheet Metal Work: – Forming and Fabricating
- Technical Drawing: – Geometrical Drawing, Pictorial Drawing, (Isometric and Oblique) Projections (1st and 3rd Angle Projections) and free hand Sketches
- Engineering Drawing: – Conventional Representations Work Drawing, Assemble Drawing, Sectional Views, Blueprints Reading and Machining Symbols.
- Trade Science and Calculations: – Friction, Force and Moments, Heat Transfer and Energy Conversion, Stress and Strain, Power Energy and Work Done.
